Thursday Thirteen #12 - Healing Beliefs

Happy Valentine's Day
to everyone!

Thirteen Basic Beliefs of Louise Hay

Since I shared a sampling of healing affirmations from Louise Hay's book YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE in last week's T-13, I decided to share some points of her philosophy today for your consideration. When confronted with such ideas initially, my mind resisted argumentatively ... but over time I've come to accept the possibility that I might be wrong in some basic assumptions I hold about life so that these days I have "a little willingness" to "suspend my disbelief" long enough to test them out. I'm frequently surprised by the little miracles that follow such actions on my part, and am healthier today that I've ever been. A few of them still give me pause, but I've come to embrace fully numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 ... while allowing the others remain possibilities for now.

Here they are for your consideration:
  1. We are each 100% responsible for our experiences.
  2. Every thought we think is creating our future.
  3. The point of power is always in the present moment.
  4. Everyone suffers from self-hatred and guilt.
  5. The bottom line for everyone is, "I'm not good enough."
  6. It's only a thought, and a thought can be changed.
  7. Resentment, criticism and guilt are the most damaging patterns.
  8. Releasing resentment will dissolve even cancer.
  9. When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works.
  10. We must release the past and forgive everyone.
  11. We must be willing to begin to learn to love ourselves.
  12. Self-approval and self-acceptance in the now are the key to positive changes.
  13. We create every so called "illness" in our body.
Thought for Today
Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor ... let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eye, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting." Mother Theresa

A very thought provoking list. Number 12 is dead on.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Adelle - Thanks for your visit and feedback. Talk about great minds! I thought of doing your "romantic couples" topic myself this morning but opted to follow through with last week’s T-13 instead. I thoroughly enjoyed YOUR selections, complete with illustrations.

I've said it before--I really like Louise Hay. I think many of us resist her words because it's easier to blame outside forces--"they" are responsible for my pain, and so on. It's a very courageous act, deciding that you are responsible for your own reality. It's not the easy choice at first glance, but in the end, nothing could be simpler.

Oh as I said lat week I love Louise Hay, great list. I have some quotes too...lol more food for thought.

Happy TT!

No. 2 is something I need to keep in mind today. Thanks for this wisdom. You are a blessing.

This is neat stuff, storyteller. I think that if you can conjure good parking spots by being thankful for the ones you get that are good, we can make all the rest of this happen, too.

It's gonna take some practice, but hey, the best things in life don't come easy.

Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

This is an awesome post. I love 10 and have had to do this in my own life.

Please drop over to my Writing Nook. I have a little something for you there.

Love and blessings,
Mary

Beautiful!! You are so right and there is definitely balance on my blog...thanks so much for caring. My TT isn't indicative of who I am at all. It just tells others where I come from and it has made me who I am. Also -- was a very long time ago (2 decades or so). I've come a looong way since then. *hugs and blessings* to you too. happy day!

Karen – You’re so right about this. Nothing could be simpler … although embracing her ideas (and this thought) is anything but easy at first.

Miranda – I remember. I’ll check your T-13 in a little while. I just returned from running errands after my WW meeting and need to think about lunch pretty soon.

Sandy Carlson – You’re quite welcome, and the feeling is mutual! I always take something meaningful away from your T-13s and think about it for days afterwards.

Susan – I so relate to what you’ve written here. My first experiences with little miracles (when grocery shopping late at night alone) were “end slots” near the door of the store that opened up just as I arrived. It seems really strange now, but this was just what I needed at that time.

Mary – I’m glad you happened by today. I apologize for not visiting your Writing Nook recently, and I’ll try to get over there after I eat something today. Life’s been busy and I’m barely keeping current with my posting.

Chuck - I’m so happy you think so. I can relate to “old stuph” … in fact if you check my 101 Things About Me you’ll discover bits of my past included there. I’m looking forward to returning to explore your blog when time permits … perhaps over the weekend when things calm down a bit? It’s nice to meet you.

Thanks to everyone for visiting and sharing your thoughts.
Hugs and blessings,

Mostly good stuff, but I disagree with the last one. Sickness is a part of the world since the fall of mankind.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

Louise Hay is so right. Her philosophy appeals to me.

Another excellent post Storyteller but like AtomiK Kitten I have to disagree with number 13.
I didn't 'create' a fractured spine but I don't hold the other person involved responsible either. Life happens, sometimes things just don't go the way you plan.

"Remember that you are an actor in a drama of such sort as the Author chooses: if short, then in a short one; if long, then in a long one. If it be His pleasure that you should enact a poor man, or a cripple, or a ruler, or a private citizen, see that you act it well. For this is your business, to act well the given part. But to choose it belongs to Another."

My Mom and Dad were in a very long, unhappy marriage until their ugly divorce a few years ago, but as soon as it was "done" my Mom no longer suffers chronic back pain and pinched nerves. So I think there's a lot to this philosophy.

What a great list..some of these really ring true and make sense. It's just hard to remember to implement them in life sometimes...thanks for sharing :)

Some very interesting thoughts there. I wish #8 was true.

I have serious doubts about 1,3 and 13....but they might work for some. I just have too many physical ailments that I certainly didn't choose and how can small babies have a role in the cards they get dealt and how they respond? I also know too many who have died with cancer despite their amazing positive non-resentful attitude.

All ideas are always up for review and consideration at least.

I meant #1 #8 and 13! Not #3.

Hope you had a Happy V' Day!

WOW! Really makes me think about things I've been thinking about. :-) I need to think more about my future! Thanks for stopping by my blog.

I'm thrilled to read all your comments and have so much to say in response that this may seem like a whole new post. LOL

AtomiK Kitten – Several give me pause even now, but I like to keep an open mind about most things. I've got more to add about this at the end of these comments.

Tink – Much of what she shares appeals to me also … more so all the time as I “play” with the ideas and affirmations she suggests.

Peajay – I’m not sure she’d call a fractured spine an “illness” … but I do know she (and Joan Borysenko) believe “accidents” may happen to us because of “patterns of thought” we hold. I've got more to add about this at the end of these comments today, so please bear with me while I respond to everyone else first.

Joely – I so relate to this. I was healthy when I married, had serious “allergies” for the 21 years I was married, and they mysteriously disappeared when my husband walked out unexpectedly. Who knew? LOL

Sandy – I agree it’s challenging to remember to apply this kind of thing. That’s why I use post-its around the house to remind me of whatever I’m working on at the time. When I taught, I used those calendars with a reminder a day that I could tear off and carry with me … post prominently and sometimes even pass along to friends (or even occasionally strangers I encountered).

Nicholas – Me too! I have a friend with cancer currently and my prayers for her recovery are constant.

Chelle – Ah yes, letting go of the past and practicing forgiveness have become regular practices in my own life, and I believe the benefits are self-evident.

MoI – I have trouble with those thoughts myself. For me, some of this is a matter of perspective. I’ve come to focus on the thought that we’re “spiritual beings having a human experience” rather than the other way around … and from that larger perspective I’m willing to entertain the possibility that my spirit chose my life challenges in order to learn whatever … even if I would have preferred to skip them (if that makes any sense).

Kat – I’m happy to know these thoughts “resonate” with your experience and extend your thinking. I love visiting T-13s and Haiku Fridays to check in weekly.

I appreciate each of you sharing your thoughts and reactions to this information. As I indicated at the beginning of the post, I’m certainly not convinced of ANY of this … but I’m unwilling to reject the ideas either. “A few of them still give me pause, but I've come to embrace fully numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 ... while allowing the others remain possibilities for now.”

My sense is that Louise Hay believes none of this is “conscious” until we make it so and each of us comes “arrives here on earth with an agenda to work through” … indicating a “spiritual perspective” beyond this life. It is what it is. Her story at the end of the book certainly gives one pause … for she was diagnosed with cancer and used these ideas to “recover” if you will.

Anyway … thanks to everybody! I love the "discussion" aspect of such topics and am happy you all feel free to express diverse points of view, enriching each of us who receives follow up comments in email. I hope you’re having a delightful day and that the weekend is wonderful.

MoI – I’m not sure when you slipped this comment in (or how I missed it earlier) but I’m happy to have found it now. I hope your knees are improving and that you’re able to exercise a bit again. Each time Molly and I head out on a walk I think about your “Natural Highs” post and feel grateful I’m able to move around easily in the world.

ahhhh yes, I found your post. i love this. what you say at the top is true for me too. i want to believe everything she claims too and am working diligently to overcome diversity in my life by grasping on to it. this is a great reference book. i keep it in my nightstand. nice post :)

Chuck – Yup … I know what you mean. My tattered copy is right here on my desk for easy reference when friends call with symptoms. I’ve purchased and given away many copies of this book to others … most recently for my friend Carol.
