As many of you know already, I'm a happy camper generally ... (being an eternal optimist seems innate for me) ... and I believe in 'accentuating the positive' as much as possible ... even in the face of adversity. It's been HOT in Southern California and that's added to my 'computer issues' ... which is why I'm creating this SATURDAY post on SUNDAY. It's a little cooler this morning and my laptop hasn't 'balked yet' ... so after posting my Camera Critters & Unconscious Mutterings, I decided to check the Saturday 9 questions (answered below) and share some SMILES today ... just because I could.

1. I'm delighted with the changes I've made on each of my blogs ... and have more plans to implement when possible. Several of you have indicated that Small Reflections loads faster and it's easier to leave comments. I'm relieved to have figured out a way to make that happen. You can read about the process in my HF#49- Changes.

2. I love the 'ducky' photo at the top of my page (found a while back at Flickzzz or Cute Overload Press perhaps and saved ... but lost amid my files until it surfaced while I looked for something else this weekend). Gotta love serendipity! I also like the 'giraffe' photo I've added to the top of Sacred Ruminations and the changes I've made to the About Me section of my sidebars. Those 'category links' permit visitors (and me) to find specific types of posts on each of my blogs easily.

3. Although it's quite possible no one other than me will ever visit and/or comment on the NEW blog I created this weekend ... I like the look ... and am happy moving 'stuph' from here to there has made things work smoother here at Small Reflections.

4. If you've not discovered Chris at Ms Cellania who participates in Witty Wednesday, you're in for a treat. The previous link takes you to all her Witty Wednesday posts. This week is her 54th entitled Irish Dog. I drop by whenever I need a chuckle, and hope you will too.

5. If you missed my 7 Really Good Things last week, I hope you'll check it out today. I keep learning how to do new things at Blogger and it's fun to share.

So ... that will wrap up my belated Smiley Saturday for now ... though I plan to post again at Sacred Ruminations (as I usually do on Sundays) if my computer cooperates.

This is my 6th...

1. The other day I purchased gas for $3.96, which was less than the $4.37 my local station charges per gallon. What is the current gas price in your area for regular?
I filled up at Costco (because I was there) on Thursday ... paid more than $51 for 11 gallons (about half a tank) ... at a price of $4.499 for regular (premium was $4.699 ) ... 30 cents/gallon less than stations around my neighborhood. Sigh! I'm grateful I don't need to drive much any more.

2. Will your vacation plans be altered by the price of gas?
I hadn't made 'vacation plans' for this year because I'm still recovering from last summer's road trip to Taos, New Mexico for the Writer's Retreat that got me started blogging and I've just spent a 'chunk of change' for a new computer ... though it's 'still in production' rather than on it's way here. Sighing once more ... probably because it's HOT again ... already. At least I live at the beach. I feel for folks inland right now ... especially where the fires are burning (and, of course, for those in the Midwest dealing with flooding), so I'm counting my blessings as always.

3. Is there any movie this summer that you're looking forward to seeing?
I've not seen a film at the theater in several years ... so probably not. I'll be catching up on Cable as last year's films show up ... and seeing this year's films next year I suppose. It works for me.

4. Gas prices aside, what is your favorite vacation destination?
Currently ... my front patio. I do love Hawaii ... and am thinking about the Maui Writer's Conference this fall because the brochure just surfaced again.

5. Will you watch more film on DVD than in theaters this summer?
Definitely ... though I'll watch even more using my DVR.

6. Will you fly anywhere this summer?
I don't think so ... unless my impulses get the better of us and I register for the Maui Writer's Conference. One never knows ;--)

7. Guess: How high will a gallon of gas peak at?
Who knows? Probably more than most of us WANT to pay ... and as high as the market will bear. The news is reporting that use of mass transit has increased in recent months here in So Cal and that more folks are using the 'park and ride' options available in some areas.

8. Will gas prices effect who you vote for in this fall's election?
Probably not. There are so many more urgent issues for me ... like ending the war in Iraq and using that 'wasted money' to pay down debt (rather than add to it) and for programs that benefit people.

9. How much will the price of home heating oil effect you?
Because the ocean 'stabilizes' temperatures in a narrower range than 'inland' areas ... I suspect it won't have much of an impact on me directly.

Saturday Stuph - Remembering Dad ... Sharing Smiles ... and Happy Flag Day everybody

This is my 5th...

This week's Saturday 9: Happy Father's Day Eve
Many of this week's questions relate to when we last saw, talked to or when we might next see our Dads. Since my father died of cancer in February of 1976 (when I was 30 and he 73), I thought I'd skip those ... so that leaves questions 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
I guess that makes mine Saturday 6 today!

1. How many siblings share your dad?
I'm the youngest of 3 kids ... my older brother died about a decade ago ... one month shy of his 65th birthday, so that leaves my sister and me. She's has been traveling the USA in an RV for the past few years since retiring from teaching. We connect often thanks to cell phones and we appreciate the free cell-to-cell minutes allowing for long conversations. Dad managed to find time to spend with each of us ... even when he worked LONG hours.

2. Do you gift him gifts on Father's Day?
As kids, the gifts we gave Dad were things we made ourselves because money was scarce. Once I had a job, I always bought gifts for him on Father's Day ... usually something I knew he'd love to have but never buy himself.

3. Have you ever had a tough time in your relationship with your father?
I don't remember any tough times or difficulties getting along with dad other than his 'typical fatherly concerns' about his teen-aged daughter 'dating' ... and even then he simply expressed them without being overly intrusive.

4. What was the last thing that you did with your dad?
Ah ... the last thing I did was to sit at his bedside and tell him he could die after all ... that we'd all manage somehow without him. Two & a half months earlier ...(at Thanksgiving)... he asked me to sit with him in the kitchen then proceeded to tell me how he'd lived a good life and I shouldn't 'be sad' when he died. My response was vehement! I told him to stop talking about death and reminded him that his dad lived to be 105 and I expected no less from him! (Denial WAS our family's way of dealing with 'stuph' like this ... and I learned it well from my mom). After all, I was only 30 ... much too young to lose a father to death, and he was young in heart, mind, body, & spirit! At that time he'd not yet seen a doctor but somehow knew what his symptoms meant. Interestingly, he 'hung on' long enough to give us all time to 'process' our impending loss and come to terms with it. Watching his health deteriorate over the next couple of months convinced me I'd been wrong ... and having the opportunity to apologize and thank him meant a great deal. He passed within hours of this conversation while my sister & I drove back to California, so I'm convinced he was waiting for me to come around.

5. Growing up, was your dad tough on you?
I was the proverbial 'apple of my dad's eye' and we shared a uniquely close relationship. He'd been ill and was out of work when I arrived on the scene ... and my mom let him provide 'primary care' for me while she busied herself with my older siblings and household matters. I have memories of those early years ... one of the most vivid is of him teaching me to turn a somersault on the front lawn. Later in his life I spent many an hour listening to baseball games on the radio with him while sorting through coins ... searching for the ones he needed to complete his collection.

6. Are you close to your father?
I carry dear memories with me and think of him daily ... so yes, even though it's been 33 years since that last day at his bedside in the hospital.

In addition, I appreciate all those who visited and left comments last week. Pressed for time lately, I've found myself leaving 'group responses' in comments rather than individual ones ... though if your email 'comes through' I've tried to respond individually when possible. I've also tried to visit your blogs and comment there, but sometimes my computer locks up on me. I'm still confused about how Blogger handles this because I know sometimes the comments I leave on the blogs of others contains my email link (smallreflections @ gmail.com) and sometimes it's listed as something like (noreply-comment @ blogger.com). This happens with comments others leave me as well. I wish I understood how this works.

I'm saddened this morning to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Tim Russert and the continued flooding in the Midwest ... my heart goes out to all those affected by these (and other disastrous & war-related) events and my prayers are with these families as well.

During the week I came across two upbeat links I'd like to share with all today ... Clean Jokes (that made me laugh aloud) and Amazing Creativity (leaving me wondering at the imaginative potential of the human mind). I hope you have time to check them both out because they're wonderful ;--)

Smiley Saturday #6 and my 4th Saturday 9

Note: Instead of sitting at my computer at home today I'm taking a Saturday class on 'Scrapbooking' with Photoshop ... so I'll be visiting blogs this afternoon after returning from class and walking Molly. In case you missed my Haiku Friday, I've learned how to make collages with Photoshop ... (you'll see 3 separate examples there) ... and I'm hoping to learn even more about how this in today's class.

This week's Saturday 9: Sharing Your Blog Habit
1. How long have you been blogging?
My first post appears on October 21, 2007 on this blog and October 22, 2007 on my other blog ... so that's about 7 and a half months. In that time I've accumulated 239 posts here at Small Reflections (240 counting this one), and 172 at Sacred Ruminations.

2. How did you start?
As a result of attending a one-week Writer's Retreat in Taos, New Mexico last summer ... I met several friends who told me about blogging and encouraged me visit some blogs and set up one of my own to share my writings. After returning home, Kara called me from her home in New Mexico and 'talked' me through the process of 'visiting' blogs ... then introduced me to Blogger and the templates. Within a few days I'd created a blog but not posted anything ... but with encouragement from Kara and my writing buddy, Jan, I jumped in with both hands (& all ten fingers), was discovered by Joy on my first day ... and have been posting daily ever since.

3. How often do you post on your blog?
At first I posted daily on BOTH blogs ... but early in 2008 I decided that was more than I could handle, so although I post daily (as a member of Blog 365) here at Small Reflections, I post 3-4 times per week at Sacred Ruminations. Even that is often challenging when life gets busy (like it's been for the past month or so), but I do the best I can.

4. Have you made good blogging friends?
Yes, I've met many interesting folks in this 'virtual world' and visit their blogs as often as possible. I enjoy reading & responding to comments they leave me here, and I always comment whenever I visit someone else. I've fallen behind in my blog-reading of late and have many unread messages in Google Reader, but hope to catch up in the weeks to come.

5. Have you talked to someone on the phone you met through blogging?
No

6. Have you met anyone from your blogging?
Nope

7. Have you had a crush on anyone you have not met?
Crush??? You've got to be kidding, right?

8. Have you had a romance with someone you have met?
Okay ... methinks I should have read ALL the questions before I started this meme. Rest assured, I'm not looking for 'romance' online. However, before the Internet was 'the World Wide Web' (in the 1980s & 90s) I did meet a number of folks online who have become friends I see regularly even now ... so I suppose it's possible I'll eventually meet a few of you folks from the Blogosphere at some point.

9. Do you suspect you get comments from someone interested in you?
Hopefully the bloggers who comment are interested in what I write and enjoy the social interaction of blogging as I do.

I'm a happy camper because
the French Open Championship Matches
will be played today and tomorrow.

Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer will vie against one another for the 4th year in a row on Sunday. It should be an excellent match, especially if the weather remains cool like it's been in Paris all week. Today Dinara Safina plays Ana Ivanovic for the women's championship. I'll be watching Sunday's match 'real time' ... (or perhaps 30 minutes delayed to avoid commercial breaks)... but will record today's match while I'm a class and watch when I return. I've shared poetic updates and photo collages for the past two weeks in case you missed our on the action.

Visiting these bloggers this week has definitely put a smile on my face, and I suspect you'd find them uplifting like me.

The phone rang last Monday evening and the 'readout' showed a name I didn't recognize, but something caused me to pick it up anyway. Interestingly (especially in light of the Saturday9 questions for last week and this ... all about high school experiences), I heard a voice asking for me using my maiden name. Forty-six years after my HS graduation, this is the second friend from those days to contact me (the first was through email a couple of months ago). We chatted for a little more than an hour and she gave me email addresses & phone numbers for a few mutual friends ... so perhaps I'll be reconnecting with more 'old friends' (can you hear Simon & Garfunkle singing in the background?) in the days, weeks, and months to come.

This week's Saturday 9: Another High School Meme

1. Can you sing the fight song?
Yes I can ... wanna hear it? "Fight fight fight ... the Eagles have the ball ..."

2. Who was your favorite teacher?
Helen Webb who taught Business Machines (typing, shorthand, etc) ... classes I took during my Senior Year because I'd completed all my requirements for graduation by the time I was a Junior (at the age of 15) ... but didn't feel ready for college just then. I also worked as an aide in the Library and School offices ... making for an easy final year of HS ;--)

3. What was your school mascot?
the Eagle

4. Did you go to the Prom?
Yes ... and I wore a lovely blue and white utterly gorgeous formal floor-length gown

5. If you could go back, would you?
No ... been there, done that ... would NOT like to do it again, though it was okay at the time.

6. What do you remember most about graduation?
Actually, I don't remember much about graduation, but since it was 46 years ago in 1962 ... I'm really not surprised.

7. Where were you on Senior Skip Day?
In my day, there WAS no such thing. We went to school EVERY day ... no excuses ever!

8. Did you have a job your senior year?
My parents believed my job was to get an education, and that's what I did. My 1st job came the summer after graduation, before entering college ... and I was a playground director.

9. Where did you go most often for lunch?
Go? We weren't permitted to leave campus ... so I didn't go anywhere but the 'courtyard' where I ate lunch the lunch (I brought from home) with my friends.

1. Who was your best friend?
I had a group of friends through Junior High and High School ... including Karen, Joyce, Marilyn, Shirley, and Pat (now known as Tricia)... most of whom I've totally lost track of other than Tricia ... though we've not seen one another for years. We do keep in contact at the holiday season.

2. Did you play any sports?
I played tennis and some basketball, but my passion in HS was 'dance' ... and I participated in classes for several years and performed in stage productions while in HS. I gave up dance for tennis in college however.

3. What kind of car did you drive?
I didn't own a car when I was in high school but was occasionally permitted to drive my Mom's Ford Galaxy (once I had a license). My brother taught me to drive his Plymouth stick-shift. He was the one who took me to get my learner's permit and was responsible for me returning with my actual license at the age of 15 and a half ... much to my parent's dismay and my friend's disbelief.

4. It’s Friday night. Where were you?
At home with my family of origin (remember my mom was Dutch and quite conservative) most nights ... but occasionally at a movie or school dance.

5. Were you a party animal?
Nope ... never have been the life of a party!

6. Were you considered a flirt?
I don't believe so. I was quite shy around boys in high school, though I did have a 'boy-friend' I met at church ... eventually married him at 23 ... and we were divorced 21 years later.

7. Were you in the band, orchestra or choir?
I played the clarinet in Junior High but not in High School. I did sing in a vocal choir for a while at school and church.

8. Were you a nerd?
I was alway a good student, but never a 'nerd' ... though I had friends who definitely delighted in the label for themselves.

9. Were you ever suspended or expelled?
No ... I never wanted to disappoint my family, so I consistently followed 'rules' as a kid.

2. What has been your worst illness or injury? I live with Epstein-Barr ... have for more than a decade.

3. Have you ever had a secret crush and then told the person? If yes, how did it go? No ... I'm rather forthright so if I like someone I say so ;--)

9. How often do you read the newspaper? Once upon a time I read it daily ... for decades, but haven't read one for at least 12 years and certainly don't miss it!

My friend Jackie called to confirm that she enrolled in the Adobe Photoshop Elements course starting on May 13th.

2. What was the most recent sports game you watched?
The 'final' of the Sony Ericsson Tennis Championship Men's Final in Miami and I blogged about it too ;--)

3. Who is your most recent friend?
My answer must be 'plural' as in 'friends' ... including fellow attendees of the Writers Retreat in Taos, New Mexico last summer ... Karen of Journey to Authenticity, Kara of Spiritdoll, Jan (my 'writing buddy' with whom I connect by phone weekly), and too many others to name here.

4. What was the most recent TV show you watched?
I'm watching 'Eyewitness News' on Channel 7 as I create this post.

5. What was the most recent music that you purchased?
Ohmygosh ... I have no clue because it's been so long since I've purchased anything (other than groceries).
