8am addendum: While constructing a comment on Penny's Fun Monday birthday post, a few thoughts popped into mine that I've decided to add here. Birthdays didn't get much attention in my family ever, and I have few memories of those occasions. There was usually a cake with candles and some practical gifts ... most often items of clothes & an occasional 'game' to be shared (like Sorry or Clue). I did have a boyfriend who when I turned 16 threw a lovely surprise party for me (crashed by a former boyfriend briefly creating a bit of chaos that fortunately didn't last long or ruin the event for me). When I turned 50, my friends wanted to wear black ... but I told them I saw that birthday as a 'Crone's Ceremony' and planned to wear RED! I encouraged them to celebrate in like manner with me and most did, though my family went with 'black' for whatever reason.I've spent enough time looking for photos to scan to share a birthday celebration to remember without much success. Because I'd rather visit other participants this morning (before I head of to Retired Ladies Lunch), I've decided to use today's Fun Monday as an opportunity to revisit and share how I celebrated MY most recent birthday online ... since back then few, if any, of you knew about me or my blog:

Birthdays--I have mixed feelings! I want them to be special, but they seldom are. My parents didn't fuss about anyone's birthdays, and that attitude has just continued--so usually, I'm depressed on my birthday. I need to figure out something different--especially considering I'll be 40 on my next one!

IamwhoIam – Thanks! This is a great topic and I’ve enjoyed reading of the celebrations of others. As for my last, it was memorable in many ways … but part of what made it so special was celebrating with virtual friends, so I'll look forward to yours.
Sayre – It is! We’ll be celebrating a friend’s birthday at Duke’s this week … so I’ll get another taste soon.
Karen – You’re back!!! How ‘kewl’ … I can hardly wait to catch up with you. I've missed you, but thanks for the postcards ... I hope you had a wonderful time. As for your 40th … I suggest that create a special day for yourself and savor it all. Remember … for me each decade gets a bit better!

I’m not sure what a Blog Carnival is … but methinks it’s a way to bring bloggers together posting on a similar issue (as with the Ultimate Blog Party a while back). I suppose there’s some place this term is defined specifically, but I’ve used it ‘in context’ here because Rebecca used it when she asked the question. My response is posted at storyteller’s Blog Rolls & Bling Blog rather than here, but I don’t know how many will actually visit because it's quite new.

I think you have the best attitude about birthdays. Wearing red is perfect! The only birthday that bothered me was when I turned 40. I didn't even know why. It really bummed me out. It wasn't until years later, that I remembered my mother commenting that I would really regret being the oldest sister because when I turned 40, I would be old and haggard while my youngest sister would still be young and beautiful and only 30 years old. I really think that sneaked into my subconcious because I could never explain my aversion to 40. I wasn't bothered by the thought of turning 41 or 80 - just 40. The mind sure can be strange sometimes.

Alison – I love writing in Haiku … and you might be surprised at what you could do. Starting with something simple and joining in with Haiku Fridays might open up a whole new world.
