This is my 1st ...

11:30am addendum: I found this meme at Yertle's (of Smile, Play, Dream) last week and again today, so I've decided to play. It seems that Kat at Sunshine and Lemonade started the ball rolling when she decided to change Friday Follies (a meme I'd never seen previously) to a 'weekend' activity. I didn't SEE a 'logo' ... so I created a 'whimsical' one of my own ... just because. So ... now I'm playing for the 1st time on the 2nd week of this meme's existence and invite YOU to play along if you choose either below in comments or on your own blog ... leaving a link here so I can read your responses too.

Explorer or Mozilla? Mozilla for sure!

Favorite musical? The Lion King ... though the revival of Flower Drum Song is a close 2nd because it was my nephew's 1st Broadway role.

This is my 16th

I'm smiling today because ...
1. I finally created new photo headers for two of my blogs and I'm fairly happy with the results. I'll like them better when I learn enough about HTML coding to 'fix' the 'template' issues creating small 'glitches' ... but I'm choosing not to be picky at the moment.

2. I've caught up with responses to comments on my blogs ... winnowed down the number of emails left to under 100 (from more than 750) ... and have the 'unread posts' in my 'reader' back in the range of about 400 even though I've been admittedly Olympics Obsessed and there's Tennis to watch too ... (exhaling to relax as I feel myself tensing up while typing).

3. The USA men and women managed to come back (after dropping the baton and failing to qualify for the final 4 x 100m relay) ... taking the Gold in the 4 x 200 relay finals.4. American 10-m Platform Divers David Boudia and Thomas Finchum qualifed in the top 12 and will compete in the finals.

5. After the USA 'Gold-medal sweep' for Beach Volleyball, both the mens and womens Volleyball teams made it to the 'finals' and although the women took 'silver' in that match against the Brazilians, the men will play Brazil for the 'gold' ...

6. Although I've not followed Basketball too closely, the USA mens and womens teams have made the Gold Medal Round ... so maybe I'll watch those games.

7. I'm enjoying a nice catch up visit on the phone with my sister this morning at the moment. They're in Rhode Island ... still enjoying the RV 'retired life' on the road. Methinks I'll post this now ... and perhaps add a few more things later. I did have some humorous links to share, but I'm having trouble 'multi-tasking' at the moment.

up now 15-12.

Addendum: This proved to be an exciting match ... for the Russians took that 3rd set and the 4th ... pushing it to a 5th 'tie-break' set that was very close to the very end, but the American's pulled out a win and will play Brazil for the Gold Medal in the next round while the Russians play for Bronze.

Yez ... I know it's Thursday, but ...

I found this at Grandy's a while back ... decided to share today ... to give myself a 'break' and allow myself to catch up a bit. I've got TONS of emails, too many unread blog posts in my 'reader' ... and comments on my blogs crying out for 'responses' from me. Of course, I'm also watching the Olympic events this morning I couldn't stay awake for last night ... just because. I'll share more later on this too.

Hmmm ... most of this seems 'right on' ... though it's 'off' in places, so perhaps I'll add 'comments' later.

For now I'm watching Misty May & Kerry Walsh play against the young Chinese team for Gold in the rain because I was just too tired last night to stay up for this beach volleyball match and didn't want to miss anything. They've taken the first game 21-18 and are TIED at 13-13 the second ... so it's all very exciting. I'm taking a quick break to post this and get a coffee refill ... then I'll savor the rest. Hope YOU'RE all having a delightful day!

10:15am Addendum - I can't resist celebrating!!!
This was Kerry's 100th win and Misty's 103rd ... and together they're the ONLY beach volleyball team to win consecutive Olympic Gold Medals. I went a little overboard with the collages, but there were just so many wonderful photos of this at Yahoo Sports that I couldn't decide which to skip.

Imagine That!!!

What do you think of my new pictorial 'header' here and at Sacred Ruminations? I realized I've got little 'glitches' in the HTML coding of my 'templates' ... but overall I'm happy to have figured out how to make these changes on my own. I've been wanting to do this (and experimenting periodically without much success until now) for months!

Although I suspect this is not what Lisa (who takes the most amazing photographs) had in mind, I begin with this 30 second long odd 'Bird Invasion' video. While sitting at the computer on June 30th this year, a strange sound drew me outside and upstairs to my deck. The electrical wires were filled with birds and I watched in amazement ... wondering what drew them here. I rushed downstairs to grab my camera to 'capture' it. Some of the birds had already moved on but this brief clip gives you some idea what it was like. I apologize for the 'blurriness' ... and I have no idea what kind of birds these were. I've lived here almost 30 years and never seen (or heard) anything quite like it.

These birds hung around for about 15 minutes before moving on ... and relative silence was restored to the neighborhood.

2. Olympics :: I've been obsessed ... admittedly. I've 'blogged' about the Olympics often this past week.
3. 100% :: Michael Phelps managed to win 8 Gold Medals in 8 events in Beijing after winning 6 Gold medals in the same 8 events in Athens ... giving him 14 gold medals over two Olympics. How 'kewl' is that?
4. Damn! :: Dara Torres (41 year old Olympic swimmer) missed the Gold in the 50m Splash 'n Dash by 1/100th of a second ... stood on the podium to receive her medal immediately afterwards (missing the opportunity to swim down and get her usual massage) ... then returned to swim the final leg of the Women's 4 x100m Medley (with just 4 minutes to ready herself before the start).
   
5. Gold :: 38 year old runner Tomescu-Dita of Romania pulled ahead half-way through the women's marathon and ran alone and unchallenged to a win in 26.44 minutes.
   
6. Fresh and natural :: Jamba Juice
   
7. Fraction :: tiles ... a 'kewl' math manipulative to teach fractional concepts in a concrete, hands-on way
   
8. Hurry :: up and wait
   
9. Summer :: Olympics in London next time around ... 2012!
   
10. 29th :: Olympiad in Beijing ... celebrating 5000 years of history in the spectacular Opening Ceremonies on 8-8-08!

T-13 #37 - Musings of my Mind this Morning

13 Musings of my Mind this Morning
(mostly about the Olympics it seems)

1. I'm frustrated with NBC's coverage of the Olympics ... holding events until 'prime time' instead of really broadcasting them LIVE because staying up until midnight here in Southern California to watch an event that's been over for HOURS seems silly to me. I did it the first few nights but have given up and now I end up watching the next morning ... trying to avoid 'news shows' so I don't learn of the results before I see the event itself. I'm currently watching the 'all around men's gymnastics event' from yesterday ... hoping my DVR will cooperate ... worried that it might fail me. Other networks like ABC manage to show the events at the 'actual time' live knowing most of us possess the technology to 'capture' and watch as time permits. I wish NBC would 'get this through their heads' and get with the program. I can't be the only frustrated viewer out here ... can I?

2. Methinks my DVR is about to give up the ghost and I'll need to call Time Warner Cable for a replacement sometime soon because some of the 'recorded' programs won't play today ... sigh! This kind of 'exchange' is always frustrating, but bothers me just a bit more today because of what's 'recorded' that I'll lose when they replace my old DVR with a new one ... so I'm in a quandry as I try to decide whether to let go of the old (sooner rather than later) in favor of what's ahead. Of course, there's no telling exactly when the cable guy would be able to get out here ... but since I'm caught up in the Olympics at the moment, I really want to see as much of it as possible. Decisions ... decisions ... LOL

3. How about that Michael Phelps? He's won 11 career gold medals (more than any other Olympic athlete in any sport) in 'new world record times' already and still has 3 events to go. I marvel at his 'schedule' during these Beijing games and wish him the best, but he does look more tired to me in each interview after his swims. At the age of 23, it's possible he could return in 4 years to swim in London ... but for now, I'm hoping he's got enough left in the tank for the 200m Individual Medley today, the 100m Butterfly on Friday, and the 4 by 100m Medley Relay on Saturday. Would someone get him a few new pair of goggles that won't fill with water, please?

4. How 'kewl' for China's women swimmers, Liu Zige and Jiao Liuyang, to take Gold & Silver in the 200m Butterfly in World Record time ... surprising everyone with the accomplishment, but disappointing Jess Schipper of Australia who took the Bronze!



5. How disappointing for the American Women's Gymnastics Team ... plagued by injury and mishap ... when they showed such promise. These two videos demonstrate what they're capable of doing ... but weren't able to do 'on the night' that mattered.


I'm sure we all 'feel' for Alicia Sacramone who would love to roll back the clock on her last two events in the team competition. I hope she can pull things together in the 'all-around' competition.

6. Can you believe these shots from Yahoo Photos (and the ones of the men's competition below) that I collaged with Photoshop? The expressions on their faces tell it all!

7. Watching Hiroyuki Tomita, the Japanese gymnast, fall from the 'rings' just now (watching last night's competition remember)... I'm hoping he's okay. I've never seen anything like that happen in competition previously. His left hand just slipped off the rings as he was preparing for his dismount and he was (in Tim Daggett's words) like a 'rag doll' as he fell to the floor.

8. Seems like Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, defending Olympic women's beach volleyball champions, are on on track for a repeat performance as they advance to the championship bracket in Beijing.

9. How surprising to learn this morning that 8th seeded American James Blake was able to 'oust' Roger Federer from these Olympics in straight sets ... Elena Dementieva of Russia defeated Serena Williams in 3 sets ... and Li Na of China took out Venus Williams ... 7-5, 7-5. I've got tennis 'recorded' but haven't seen any of those matches myself.

1o. Watching the men 'all around gymnasts' compete this morning was fun ... (though a bit sad without the Hamm brothers who were both sidelined with injuries). It's amazing to see what these guys do 'flying high' in the air. As expected Wei Yang of China took the Gold ... finishing almost 3 points ahead of Silver Medalist Kohei Uchimura of Japan. Benoit Caranobe of France won the Bronze after Fabian Hambuechen fell from the high bar and ended up 7th.
11. Alexander Artemev (2nd alternate for) the United States made the most of his Olympic experience ... saving the Bronze medal for Team USA with a wonderful performance on the pommel horse and finishing 12th in the 'all around' ... but Jonathon Horton couldn't quite 'stick' the landings in last night's competition and finished in 8th place.

12. I've enjoyed putting my PSE6 skills to effective use creating these collages from photos found at Yahoo Sports again this morning.

13. I had a nice 'catch up conversation' with my sister on the cellphone just now ... making this post even later than it might have been. She and her husband are both enjoying the sites and 'lobster meals' in coastal Maine ... hanging out as they wait for their 'mail' to catch up with them before the head south.
