I thought of many options for this week's prompt ...
(including, but not limited to):
1. the seemingly unlimited supply of 'dust bunnies' Molly generates daily
2. endless 'clutter' everywhere I look around me (even though I'm working regularly to get rid of stuph)
3. necessary items like premium coffee beans to grind & brew fresh daily ... along with half & half for 'creamer'
4. unwatched recorded programs on my DVR ... (most of which are Olympic events at the moment)
5. tasks on multiple 'to do' lists requiring my attention ...(even as I sit here blogging)
6. unread emails and blog posts in my 'reader'
7. gratitude that I'm not in the process of gearing up with 'school supplies' and getting a classroom ready for students
8. the incredible music of Air Supply ... like All Out Of Love and Making Love out of Nothing at All.

However what I've decided to go with today is ...

Fun Monday #18 - Favorite Photograph(s) ...

Make Time for Small Reflections

AOJ of the Lurchers is hosting Fun Monday this week and asks us to ...

"show me your favourite photograph and tell me why it's your favourite. It can be one you've taken yourself or one someone else has taken, a snapshot or a more professional image. Is there a story behind it? Do you love it for the memories it gives or just because it's pleasing to the eye?"

I apologize for publishing later than usual today ...(I confess the Olympics has captivated my attention so I didn't get around to this task until this morning & I've been 'distracted' as I attempted to select photos for the two collages)... and for 'cheating' by creating these collages of photos from my week in Taos during the summer of 2007, but the remembrance of that experience IS what keeps me blogging. I do love each of these pictures (along the ones in my sidebars and various Taos related posts along the way), and choosing just one didn't seem possible (though I did try).

The 'outside' views above are a few of my 'favorite spots & activities' ... the ones below remind me how lovely the 'inside' areas were & the delicious food served to us daily for breakfast, afternoon snacks, and dinner. I sat often in these chairs to write and spent way too much money on books ... but I wouldn't change a thing.

I selected many of these images because I don't recall sharing many of them (although some will be familiar to those who read me regularly). All bring back wonderful memories this morning.
I hope YOU enjoy them too. FYI: The Mable Dodge Luhan House in Taos, New Mexico is a delightful place to 'vacation' ... and is reasonably priced for the area. In addition to the collages & Taos photos in my sidebar here and at Sacred Ruminations, I'm including links to other posts containing favorite images from (and information about) my Writer's Retreat experience in July-August of 2007 ... on this blog and my other blog ... just because.

I'm smiling today because ...
1. I just watched Andy Roddick win his quarter final match against Marc Gicquel easily ... in straight sets, and am looking forward to viewing his semi-final match against Denis Gremelmayr later on today. Andy's been plagued with physical problems lately, but started off the 2008 season with some excellent wins against all the top players ... including Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. He opted to skip the Beijing Olympics this year to concentrate on the US Open Series instead. If he wins this Countrywide Classic Olympus Tournament, he'll have 100 points and be 'in the mix' for the rest of the series leading up to the US Open.

2. I was able to create the collage above in just minutes using Photoshop Elements due to what I've learned this summer in my PSE6 classes at the local public Adult Education Center nearby.

3. Although I have mixed feelings about China's political policies, watching the Opening Ceremonies last night (after releasing my frustration over the delay until 8pm knowing other parts of the world viewed them much earlier than we did here in Southern California) generated excitement for the games to follow over the next 16 days ... and I'm looking forward to watching some of the events. I especially enjoy gymnastics, volleyball, beach volleyball, swimming, cycling, rowing, diving, equestrian, and (of course) tennis.

Upon consideration of this week's HoTs theme: 'manner' ... this woman came to mind. Do you recognize Judith Martin, aka 'Miss Manners' ... American journalist, author and etiquette authority? According to Wikipedia:

"Since 1978 she has written an advice column, which is distributed three times a week by United Features Syndicate and carried in more than 200 newspapers worldwide. In the column, she answers etiquette questions contributed by her readers and writes short essays on problems of manners, or clarifies the essential qualities of politeness.

Judith Martin writes about the ideas and intentions underpinning seemingly simple rules, providing a complex and advanced perspective, which she refers to as "heavy etiquette theory". Her columns, noted for their wit, humor, depth of analysis, and broad knowledge of history and customs and their applications to the problems of today, have been collected in a number of books. In her writings, Martin refers to herself in the third person, e.g. "Miss Manners hopes..."

This is my 300th post on this blog and my 509th overall! I'll celebrate my 1st Blogoversary in 79 days ... and I can't imagine how many posts I'll have published by then. Anyone care to estimate at this point?

This week's Fun Monday is hosted by Mothers of Brothers. She writes:

"So tell us about your favorite word… or if you can’t pick just one, tell us about a few. Are there certain words that feel good the way they roll off your tongue? Do some words make you feel smart? Or silly? Or happy? Which words do you find yourself selecting to put in your posts?"

My thoughts went to Wordle immediately realizing it was the quickest and simplest way to SEE what words I've used most often ... recently. I found and shared this nifty (if addictive) resource about 3 weeks ago in a Smiley Saturday post after creating 3 'wordles' as I was seeking input on a 'slogan' for this blog. If you click the link you'll see they're all a bit different in appearance, but use the same words. Clicking on the individual 'wordles' takes you to an enlarged version in the 'gallery' at Wordle.Net so they're easier to read.

I created the 'wordle' in the header above earlier this morning by entering the URL for Small Reflections, and the one below with the URL for Sacred Ruminations. As I experimented a bit just now, I've discovered the Wordle Site has stored all mine on a single 'gallery page' for 'storyteller' ... making them easy to locate later.

I love words of all kinds ... and these graphics show words I've actually used. The next one contains words from an 'edited version' of last week's Fun Monday challenge (I removed 'shall, rather, and some of the negatives' to focus on my suggestions) ... 'If I was Queen for a Year.'

... and the next using the text of a meditation from Louise Hay's YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE that I shared last Monday at Sacred Ruminations:

Given the fact that I started this post almost 2 hours ago, methinks it may be impossible to select just a few favorite words to highlight ... yet 'reflection' does come to mind as I bring this post to a close. It has so many connotations and meanings:

reflection (plural reflections)

1. the act of reflecting or the state of being reflected
2. the property of a propagated wave being thrown back from a surface (such as a mirror)
3. something, such as an image, that is reflected

   The dog barked at his own reflection in the mirror.

4. careful thought or consideration

   After careful reflection, I have decided not to vote for that proposition.

5. an implied criticism

   It is a reflection on his character that he never wavered in his resolve.

6. (computing) The process or mechanism of determining the capabilities of an object at run-time.

Yet it does capture the essence of what I do in my journals and on my blogs ...

I was tagged by Mary, the teach at Work of the Poet for this one.

It seems fun and simple enough ... so here goes.

The rules: All you have to do is Google your first name with the word needs behind it and post the first 10 results. Don't forget to tag people (if you are the tagging sort)!

My results may differ from most folks because I don't capitalize 'storyteller' since I see the term as generic rather than specific. Google listed the following 10 things for the query 'storyteller needs' ... I found & used the graphic below a while back for a Photobucket Meme and the one at the top left at Google Images. Lavender Addendum: I initially published this without adding comments, but (alas) I couldn't leave it alone. Feel free to ignore the purple italics if in a rush ;--)

1. Children's Storyteller Needs a Catchy Name (maybe so ...)
2. storyteller needs to make the subtle distinction between what a story is about on a deeper, foundation level, from what's at stake for its characters ... (perhaps this helps explain why I stick to personal narrative rather than fiction?)
3. storyteller needs to remember that most communication occurs via nonverbal transmissions (stories are meant to be told, not read) ... rather challenging in a 'verbally oriented environment' like a blog & may be why I tend to use pictures and 'asides' such as this to add more information?
4. every storyteller needs (in order to have a successful & satisfying telling experience) to know the story ... and know that you know the story ... I count on (meaning trust) my fingers to know the story when I sit down to write it because I often have no clue what's about to show up ... seriously.
5. storyteller needs to be a master of spontaneous verbal composition ... Yup, I have the 'spontaneity' down pat ;--)
6. storyteller needs to be sensitive to his audience and may need to regain their attention before continuing. (I do my best with this, but again ... in a blog this becomes a bit more elusive & challenging)
7. storyteller needs to select a story which will meet the needs of the situation and then must tailor the story to fit the time ... (and this may be why I continue to blog mainly for myself, feeling surprised & blessed by whoever happens by and whatever comments you all opt to leave behind)
8. storyteller needs to bring the words to life! Each character needs to have a distinct voice ... (since I'm the only 'character' there seems to be only my voice ... but it does show up in different forms now that I stop to think about it)
9. storyteller needs to be a wordsmith, a master magician, a swift editor ... (perhaps I can 'own' these skills after years of practice both in and out of the classroom)
10. storyteller needs to draft a one page (500 words or less) personal narrative unfolding a defining moment in their life (methinks that limiting myself to 500 words is asking the impossible, so don't hold your breath on this one)

I don't usually 'tag' anyone (preferring to invite anyone who wishes to play) ... however, perhaps the following bloggers might be interested in participating? (no pressure intended, just encouragement). Note: the parenthetical lavender 'asides' aren't a requirement in the rules ... simply an obsessive addition of my own. I'm smiling today because ...

1. Blogger cooperated allowing me to upload a brief video of my own yesterday for Sky Watch and this morning for Camera Critters.

2. I spent a pleasant afternoon with two friends in the real world yesterday and managed to run my errands on the way home (picking up 12 gallons of water at my local water store, coffee beans at Starbucks, and groceries at Trader Joes) so I won't need to leave home today and battle weekend crowds.

3. Using my new laptop to 'blog' from my front patio has been working wonderfully well. I can enjoy the fresh air, flowers, and sunrise as I've done for years when writing with my pencil in my journals instead of sitting inside plugged in.


4. I've purchased a new cell phone finally and Verizon transferred the data from my old one successfully. The biggest difference is in the smaller size, significantly lighter weight, and nifty 'red' color ... and my new one has a camera my old one

didn't. I did need to download new ringtones and reassign the speed dial numbers, but it's been a fairly simple change to manage because they're both LGs and work basically the same way with only minor changes.

I resisted this change for longer than I should have, but I really did like my old phone and the way I had it set up with different ringtones for different family members and friends so I could tell who it was before picking up the call ... and hate buying all the necessary 'accessories' (chargers for home and car, etc.) Interestingly, by purchasing the phone at Costco and agreeing to change to a new cell number, I received a case, hands-free ear cord, and two chargers free ... paid just $10 for the phone (because I wanted the red one) ... they reimburse me for the $35 'activation fee' and my plan remains the same. Seemed worthwhile to me even though I didn't really want a camera in my cellphone.

5. There's mens and womens TENNIS matches to watch today and tomorrow as the tournaments in Cincinnati and Montreal wrap up. I've got yesterday's match between Nadal and Lapentti recorded and plan to watch it this morning. If Rafa won, it looks like he may become #1 in the world very soon.

With that in mind,
